Dropped Pin Text Message Only Clue In Disappearance of Sandy Woman

SANDY, Utah – A dropped pin text message is the best lead Sandy police have in a missing person case.

Family members of Jan Jenkins, 64, contacted police after not hearing from her since Friday. Jenkins, who lives with her mother in Sandy, left on Thursday to go camping, with Cody Young. Young, believed to be in his 40s, sent Jenkins’ brother a text message late Friday night, telling him where he dropped her off, following an argument.

“He no longer wanted to tolerate her behavior and that is when he kicked her out of the van,” said Jace Pearson, Jenkins’ brother.

Pearson, who did not receive the text message until the next morning, says no one in the family has heard from Jenkins ever since.

The dropped pin was near Eureka, in Juab County, at the Silver City turnoff, along U.S. Highway 6. He says, along with the pin, the text message sent to him by Young was bizarre.

“It rambled on, it was 55 pages of text messages, basically talked about their crazy relationship,” Pearson added, who said the argument may have been about money.

“It was about some work my sister had hired him to do at my mother’s house, some repairs,” he said.

Pearson says his sister has struggled with substance abuse and her mental health, but had never been out of contact with family for this long, prompting them to call Sandy police on Wednesday.

“When we were notified we did contact Juab County Sheriff and they went out to the last known place but there wasn’t any sign of her,” said Sgt. Jason Nielsen, with the Sandy Police Department.

Police aren’t suspecting foul play yet, but share the family’s concern, especially since no one can reach either one of them, especially Young.

“We believe he is one of the last people to talk with her, and so we need to get his side of the story and see where she was really dropped off and start going from there,” Sgt. Nielsen added.

Sandy police are asking if you have any information on the whereabouts of Jan Jenkins, Cody Young or the black 1980’s van with Arizona plates CGA3392, to please give them a call at 801-799-3000.
