Affordable And Simple Gadgets That Will Make Your Trick-Or-Treater Really Stand Out To Drivers

Oct 30, 2018, 5:25 PM | Updated: 9:23 pm

For parents, the thought of their youngsters crossing dark streets in their quest for candy, well, can be more than a little spooky. But, there are many affordable gadgets than help make their trick-and-treaters much more visible to drivers.

REFLECTIVE TAPE

We bought a small roll for $2.50 and it’s really easy to incorporate reflective tape into your child’s costume: maybe as belt, strap or just stick it on their candy bag. However you use it, the tape will make kids really stand out to oncoming cars.

GLOW STICKS

Don’t underestimate the power of glow sticks. They are cheap, a two pack will cost around $2, and they add tons of visibility to your trick-and-treater.

LED CLIP ON LIGHTS

For ten dollars, you can clip a very bright LED light anywhere onto your child’s costume. We bought ours at a running store. They are fantastic for making people easy-to-spot. Plus, you can set them to flash, making your child stand out even more in the dark.

LIGHTED ARMBANDS

Lighted armbands like this will also pump up your child’s visibility to drivers. You can expect to pay between $10 and $20 for a glow or LED armband. Another big plus is many are waterproof.

MORE LED APPAREL

For $5 we found a flashing LED jack-o-lantern necklace at a party supply story for even more visibility. Though, we didn’t find these in the stores we visited, other similarly priced items include LED shoelaces as well as LED hair extensions

LIGHTED CANDY BAG

For around $12 to $20 you can buy a lighted candy bag that lights up brilliantly. Can’t find one? You can simply add a clip on light, reflective tape or another gadget to your kid’s current bag.

We’re not saying trick-or-treaters should be lit up like Christmas trees, but just using one or two of these affordable lights will help keep your trick-or-treater safe.

DITCH THE MASK

Here’s something to make cars more visible to kids, ditch the mask. Sure, they’re fun but they can also shift around making it hard to see. If a mask is necessary, don’t hesitate to cut out larger eye slits.

A better option is to use non-toxic face paint or make-up instead of a mask. Just make sure it doesn’t get too close to your child’s eyes.

TRACKING GADGETS

For extra-peace of mind, parents might consider using tracking tools such as the My Buddy Tag.  The $38 wearable sends an alert to mom and dad’s phones when kids leave their designated trick-or-treat zone. There’s also a panic button in case of trouble.

And, if your child will have a smartphone with them, the free version of the RedPanic Button app allows them to press the app’s button to automatically text their coordinates to mom and dad that open up in Google Maps.
