Votes For Prop 2 In Lead With 24% Of Ballots Left To Count

Nov 7, 2018, 8:18 AM | Updated: 8:20 am

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – There were several races and initiatives that were still too close to call in Utah hours after the polls closed on Election Day.

One of those is Proposition 2, which would legalize cannabis for medicinal purposes for qualifying Utah patients.

The supporters of Utah’s medical marijuana initiative were ready to claim victory Wednesday morning, with 53 percent voting for Proposition 2. However, about a quarter of the votes had yet to be counted as of 8 a.m.

The celebration came early for Prop. 2 supporters at the Infinity Events Center downtown as the results came in overnight. Proponents said they hope lawmakers don’t mess too much with the initiative during the upcoming special legislative session.

“They mess with the law, they mess with the people now,” supporter Greg Stertz said. “This is a people’s vote, and this is what the people want.”

“I don’t ever plan to use marijuana,” said Peter Cannon, another supporter of Proposition 2. “I hope my children never need to. If they need that substance to help them with some health condition, I hope it will be available for them.”

The votes for Proposition 2 stood at a nearly-50,000 gap Wednesday morning with 76 percent of the votes counted. Those numbers represent the votes from the precincts; mail-in ballots still need to be counted.
