MURRAY, Utah – Police were looking for the occupants of a stolen truck that rolled and crashed in the Murray City Cemetery Thursday, leaving behind a trail of damage and toppled headstones.

The series of events began to unfold after 2 p.m., when investigators said the dark-colored Dodge Ram clipped a city ordinance enforcement vehicle at the cemetery.

Murray Police Sgt. Kim Rees said the truck exited the cemetery but was soon spotted by two different police officers who activated the lights on their vehicles.

“He then left at a high rate of speed from that approximate area and hit two cars in the intersection of Vine (Street) and 5600 South, and then entered back into the cemetery over the curb and rolled,” Rees said.

Rees said the driver and occupant fled into the apartments west of the cemetery.

Officers went through the areas with K-9s but were not able to locate the two people, according to police.

Rees said there were no apparent injuries on scene, but it was unclear how the two people in the truck weathered the rollover.

Onlookers like Michael Sundquist were in disbelief over the chain of events.

“Who would ever think this would happen?” Sundquist questioned. “Unbelievable.”

Sundquist said he had relatives buried at the cemetery and was dismayed by all the damage.

“(It’s) really a bad scene,” Sundquist said. “Yeah, it’s a sad deal.”
