Man Turns Himself In Following SWAT Standoff And Domestic Dispute

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah – A man police were looking for following a SWAT standoff is behind bars after turning himself in early Thursday.

52-year-old James McCormick turned himself into the Murray Police Department after his parents say they dropped him off.

South Salt Lake Police say the stand-off all stemmed from a domestic violence dispute earlier this week that left his girlfriend with a fractured spine.

Wednesday, SWAT surrounded McCormick’s home at 61 East Cordelia Avenue in South Salt Lake around 8 p.m. However, after five hours outside they entered the home and McCormick was nowhere to be found.

About an hour prior, police say McCormick took off after they tried to make a traffic stop near 3300 South at a McDonalds from a reported domestic violence dispute that had taken place.

 “We had an arrest warrant for him for a case involving an aggravated assault. Where he threw his girlfriend to the ground and continued to jump on her fracturing her spine in multiple places so he is a person we wanted to get off the street,” said Executive Officer Gary Keller with South Salt Lake Police.

According to police, McCormick has a history of firearms violations and a violent criminal history. His parents came down from Wyoming after learning about the standoff from family, they are upset over the allegations and the damage to the home.

McCormick has been booked on Aggravated domestic Violence and charges for fleeing the scene. This is an ongoing investigation.
