MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Dates for the rededication of two temples in the Southern United States have been announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Memphis Tennessee Temple was closed in October 2017 for remodeling. It was announced it would be rededicated on Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will conduct the rededication.

The Memphis structure was the Church’s 80th operating temple, originally dedicated in April 2000 by President James E. Faust, second counselor in the First Presidency.

It was the first of two temples in Tennessee. The Nashville Tennessee Temple was opened less than one month later.

The Oklahoma City Oklahoma Temple was also shut down in October 2017 for remodeling. It will be rededicated on Sunday, May 19, 2019.

President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the First Presidency will conduct the rededication.

The Oklahoma temple was the 95th operating temple and first in the Sooner State, also dedicated by President Faust, in July 2000.

Both temples were among the “smaller” structures announced by then-President Gordon B. Hinckley. They were among 33 temples completes and dedicated in 2000 – the most to be dedicated in a single year in the Church’s history.

Church officials said attendance at both sessions would be by invitation only. There were no plans for an open house or other activities.

The sessions will not be broadcast to local meetinghouses, so members of local congregations should plan to attend their regularly-scheduled Sunday meetings.

Both temples were shut down for mechanical upgrades and updates in finishes and furnishings. The Tokyo Japan was shut down at the same time, and the Asunción Paraguay Temple was closed the following month.

Dates have not been announced for the rededication of the other two temples.
