Ogden IRS Employees Called Back To Work Without Pay

Jan 17, 2019, 11:41 PM

OGDEN, Utah — Nearly 1,000 of the 4,000 furloughed employees at the Internal Revenue Service center in Ogden are being called back to work without pay.

Nic Trujillo, a collections representative, was one of the workers who got the call Wednesday morning.

“It’s going to be stressful when I go back to work,” he said. “The only thing that is going to change is that I won’t have a paycheck.”

Trujillo is a single father to 6-year-old Zane who has special needs. He said the two are about two weeks away from being evicted.

“Not getting paid is stressful, it is worrisome,” Trujillo said. “Since I’m a single parent, I have to take care of everything from putting a roof over his head, food into his belly and his medication that he takes.”

Trujillo applied for unemployment when the shutdown began and said he had already received a check. He worries he will not meet the requirements for those funds since he is headed back to work on Friday.

“I’ve become depressed,” he said. “I’m staying up all night, sleeping during the day when I shouldn’t be and I’m eating maybe once or twice a day.”

This is not the first shutdown Trujillo has experienced in his 18 years with the IRS but it is certainly the longest. He is hoping both sides of the aisle will come to an agreement.

“I hope that they can do that and I hope they can do that swiftly,” he said.

Trujillo and the other ‘essential’ employees are expected to report back to work by Thursday, Friday and Monday
