One Year Later: Kaysville Officers Revisit Scene Of Fire Rescue

KAYSVILLE, Utah — Four Kaysville city police officers caught in a fireball while saving a suicidal man one year ago revisited the scene together for the very first time today.

All four officers spoke exclusively to news specialist Dan Rascon as they met at that Chevron Gas Station at 200 North and 300 West to express their feelings about what it’s like to be together one year later at a place where any one of them could have lost their lives.

“It brings you chills,” said Sgt. Lacy Turner. “Very lucky and very thankful and lucky that everyone is standing here with me and we all made it out.”

“Every time I show up here I think about that day,” said Officer Robert Jackson. “It’s always going to have a place in my life. I still have scars from the incident that I see every day.”

It was about 2 o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday April 5^th of last year when the call came in about a suicidal man that had poured gasoline on himself and had concealed himself in the mens bathroom.

Officer Jackson, Sgt. Turner, Lt. Shawn McKinnon and Officer Cade Bradshaw all ended up in the bathroom to try and talk him down from lighting himself on fire.

Then suddenly the man flicked a lighter — and that’s when the room went up in flames.

Surveillance video from the store captured the officers on fire as they came running and diving out of the restroom.

“(You) go into survival mode and everyone trying to get out of a tiny door way all at once,” said Officer Cade Bradshaw who got burned on his arm and face. “I feel lucky to be able to come back her and continue to serve.”

“All five of us trying to get out of the bathroom at the same time,” said Lt. McKinnon, whose hair caught fire. “It was hot and it was loud.”

“The sound of the flames engulfing us I don’t think I will ever forget,” said Sgt. Lacy Turner.

All five officers have completely healed and there are no signs of injuries.

Through it all they have formed a new kind of bond with each other.

“They are my brothers. It’s amazing how close we’ve become in the last year,” said Sgt. Turner.

“This incident definitely changed my outlook on life. Definitely don’t take things for granted anymore because you never know,” said Officer Jackson.
