Another Rainy Spring Day Leads Some To Seek Spring Break Fun In Mountain Snow

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah — It was another soaker of a spring day in Utah with rain in the valleys and snow in the mountains.

It’s been rainy and gray all day in the Salt Lake Valley. If you drive up into the Cottonwood canyons and you’ll still find people enjoying the snow, ready to play.

“This is a lot of snow,” said Becky Lutz, of West Jordan, as she helped her five children strap on their snowshoes.

Her kids are on spring break, so Lutz knew she and her kids were going to have to have some fun, and that wasn’t going to happen in the rain in the valley.

“Well, if you can’t play in the rain, you might as well go play up in the snow,” she said. “So, here we are.”

“We’re going to try snowshoeing, then we’re going to do some sledding,” said Samantha Lutz, the eldest of the siblings.

It’s not exactly what the kids had in mind when they thought about spring break ahead of time.

“I think it’s kind of weird,” Samantha said of the weather.  “I’m kind of sick of the snow.”

At home, at least. It’s still fun up in the mountains, she said. They enjoyed their first outing together as a family on snowshoes.

“I’d like it a little warmer,” said Samantha. “But, I like the snow too.”

The three resorts at the top of the canyons that remain open piled up another 10 inches of snow on top of 10 inches they got yesterday. Snow levels dropped all the way down to 6000 feet.

“I thought it would be more rainy up here,” said Becky Lutz. “But, it’s perfect snow for playing in.”

Sledding and snowshoeing are still options, and will be for several weeks.

“You’ve just got to make the best of it,” said Lutz. “The snow comes: you play it. The snow is not there: you find other things to do.”
