Multiple Departments Work Together, Put Out Two Fires, Happening At The Same Time

May 5, 2019, 7:04 PM | Updated: 7:11 pm

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – Two fires, that broke out just miles and minutes apart Sunday, tested the resources of nearby departments. Thankfully, none of those involved appeared to break a sweat over how things were going to work out. The first of the two garage fires was called in just after 10am, at 11768 Monument Circle. Minutes later, another fire was called in to 911, at 1945 W. Ignot way.

“When they arrived, they had heavy flames and smoke showing from the garage, so they had a fully involved garage fire,” South Jordan Deputy Fire Chief, Ryan Lessner said of the Ignot way fire. “They made a quick initial fire attack. The goal was to keep the fire out of the house, and as well do a quick search of the structure.”

Lessner says the fire was put down, and contained to the garage within a fairly short amount of time. The outcome along Monument Circle was similar. South Jordan firefighters however, were not alone in their efforts.

“All the closest units are dispatched, to make sure we have the quickest response to make sure the fire is put out,” Lessner said. “If another fire occurs in any city, you’ll have additional resources respond to that.”

Lessner says that organized response happens thanks in part to long-standing agreements that have been in place with neighboring agencies, for decades. Dispatchers decide who’s closest, and call out units accordingly.

“That’s obviously why our crews prepare and train. We never know when fires are going to come in,” Lessner said.

In each of the garage fires Sunday, no one was hurt, and the flames did not spread to the attached or nearby homes.

“The dispatch center does a great job, sending the closest resources,” Lessner said. “(They) ensure that we have firefighters respond quickly, so that we get this thing put out as quick as possible.”
