SLC Holds “Pit Stop” Bike Registration

May 9, 2019, 3:15 PM | Updated: 3:18 pm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — May is Utah Bike Month and Salt Lake City held several pit stops Thursday to register bikes for free.

Salt Lake City Police officers were at the pit stop near the downtown library and said bike thefts are a problem so registering them is important.

That’s the problem we see on bicycles and all kinds of stolen property is people don’t document their serial numbers which makes it really hard for us to return the property,” said Sgt. Brandon Shearer with the Salt Lake Police Department. “We want to get property to its rightful owners but without that serial number documentation it’s tough to do that.”

Registering your bike only takes a couple minutes whether it’s done in person or online.

Thursday morning the city held 27 pit stops throughout downtown from 7 to 9,  giving riders the opportunity to quickly get it done.

The Salt Lake Police Department says this year so far 176 bikes have been reported stolen. They’ve recovered six of those and found 56 abandoned bikes that may or may not have been stolen, but had no serial numbers.

To riders like Tom and John who ride into work now with the spring weather, they are glad they got it done.

“You know I spent a fair amount of money on the bike and I love that the city recently changed it so you can register for free, something I’ve been meaning to do and it only took 5 minutes,” Said John Larsen.

Bike owners can always complete registration at SLCPD.com or by stopping into the Salt Lake Police station.
