SANDY, Utah – A flood watch was put into place Thursday for Little Cottonwood Creek in Salt Lake County.
It will last through Friday.
The fast-moving water is flowing through cities like Murray and Sandy. Officials have wasted no time sandbagging the banks of the creek through Murray Park, and signs have been posted warning park visitors to stay away from the water.
In some areas, the creek flows right next to playgrounds, which means parents must be alert, especially as the Father’s Day weekend approaches. Pet owners are asked to keep careful watch over their dogs, as well.

Kim Sorensen with Murray Parks and Recreation said the creek at this time of the year is normally half of what it is currently.
“Salt Lake County Flood Control has given their flood prediction that the river will be about 700 CFS, maybe a little more maybe a little less,” he said. “It will be higher than it is today. There will be places where it’s coming over the banks.”
He reiterated that residents who plan on being anywhere near the creek need to use extreme caution.
According to the National Weather Service, water is expected to reach near flood levels Thursday afternoon. NWS officials are also warning damage is possible in valley areas adjacent to the creek.
Water in general can be an attraction to kids and adults, but when it’s flowing this fast, it’s best to keep a safe distance.
