Heat Advisory, Red Flag Warning In Place Ahead Of Pioneer Day

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A heat advisory is remaining in place along the Wasatch Front as the area is expected to see another day of triple-digit weather.

In addition to the advisory, nearly half the state is also under a red flag warning, meaning conditions are very dry and perfect for wildfires.

KSL TV meteorologist Grant Weyman said some areas could see lightning throughout the day and evening. This, coupled with fireworks use in celebration of Pioneer Day, could significantly increase the chance of new fires.

While Utahns have no control over when and where lightning strikes, residents do have control over when and where they use fireworks.

According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, it’s best to forego personal fireworks use altogether.

“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals instead of setting off your own,” according to the DPS. “Always keep a safe distance and remember to never allow young children to use fireworks.”

DPS officials said that if Utahns choose to use personal fireworks, they need to follow basic safety measures:

• Know the daily fire dangers
• Obtain proper permits
• Choose a safe area free of flammable materials
• Make certain fireworks are completely out and cold before leaving
• Have water and tools nearby
