Lightning-caused Fires Being Allowed To Burn To Reduce Fuel Buildup

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Three lightning-sparked fires continue to grow in central and southern Utah.
Two are burning in the Manti-La Sal National Forest.
Peavine Fire
The Peavine Fire near Blanding has burned more than 1,200 acres. It’s being treated as a management fire, meaning it will be allowed to burn in order to help clear vegetation and refresh growth within the forest.
Poison Canyon Fire
The Poison Canyon Fire is currently burning near Monticello now stands at 185 acres. It is also being treated as a management fire.
Mammoth Fire
The Mammoth Fire in central Utah is being driven by hot, dry and breezy conditions. The 230-acre fire is burning near Huntington Reservoir, and officials said lightning started the fire in an area where a controlled burn was already planned.
