Church President Speaks To BYU Students At Weekly University Devotional

Sep 17, 2019, 1:07 PM | Updated: Jun 8, 2022, 5:02 pm

PROVO, Utah – President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spoke to BYU students at the university’s weekly devotional. It was his first devotional since becoming president of the church 18 months ago.

It was a rare opportunity for students to hear from the President of the Church Tuesday morning.

The Marriott Center was filled to capacity before the address began at 11 a.m. President Nelson invited young adults throughout the church to watch this devotional on the internet several days ago through his social media pages.

Speaking on five points of truth, President Nelson shared thoughts on the love and laws of God. He also referenced the Church’s 2015 and 2019 policies involving children of LGBT couples and spoke of the efforts the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles prayed for guidance before receiving revelation to make adjustments.

“We also clarified that homosexual immorality would be treated in the eyes of the Church in the same manner as heterosexual immorality,” Nelson said. “Though it may not have looked this way to some, the 2015 and 2019 policy adjustments on this matter were both motivated by love.”

President Nelson also invited those in the audience here to pray about those changes and policies for themselves.

Certainly, a landmark address for the church president to speak at the church-owned university, KSL reporter Sam Penrod has more reaction and more on his address coming up during the 5p p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts.
