SPRINGDALE, Utah — A search and rescue team from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and National Park Service located the body of a missing hiker in Zion National Park Thursday.
Zion National Park spokesperson Aly Baltrus said the victim is a 19-year-old woman from Maine.
The woman reportedly fell off the Angels Landing trail Wednesday evening.
Baltrus also said rangers were looking into reports of a missing woman at the park Wednesday and confirmed the body found Thursday was consistent with the age of the missing woman.
Investigators said the body was located below Angels Landing and further information will be released once a positive identification is made and family is notified.
A joint investigation is being conducted by Zion National Park and Washington County Sherriff’s Office.
A flash flood warning was in effect for the park Wednesday morning after heavy rain hit the area and much of southern Utah Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.
The Angels Landing trail had also closed last week due to a rockslide. It had reopened on Tuesday.
Repairs on the Angels Landing Trail are complete and the trail is fully open.
We recommend using caution if you choose to hike the trail in the next few days because the approaching winter storm could cause challenging conditions on the strenuous hike.
