Mother of 4-Year-Old Hit, Killed at Intersection Released From Hospital

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Superheroes often stop bad things from happening to good people.
It’s why 4-year-old Holden Curtis loved them.
“He lover Spider Man,” said Curtis’ mother.
But, in real life, at the intersection of 900 West and California Avenue last Saturday, it would’ve taken super strength to stop a car from hitting Curtis.
“I’ve crossed that road since I was Holden’s age, you know what I mean? You never think it’s going to be you or your child,” said Ashlee Loscher-Curtis, who is Curtis’ mother.
The broken femur Loscher-Curtis suffered from also being hit will heal, but the emotional pain of being there with her son at his final moment, not even the best doctors can fix that pain.
“Losing your only child is not something that will ever, ever, go away,” she said.
Friday was Curtis’ funeral.
He is being remembered for his smile, his fun nature, and his family drawings.
“He had the cutest little dimples because he was always smiling,” said Loscher-Curtis.
However, it’s his big heart and compassion for others that will really be missed.
Especially when it came to spending time with his mother.
“We would go on mommy-son dates all the time,” she said. “He would ask to carry my debit card in his pocket so he could pay the waiter for the dinner or the movie.”
No way was a gentleman like Curtis going to let his single mother pay the bill.
“People always talk about how single parenting is hard and how do you do that and how are you getting through that? And my answer from the time he was little was always I got lucky. I got a good kid,” she said.
Maybe Curtis’ tender soul is also why his mother isn’t mad at the driver who hit them.
Even though police say he was driving drunk.
“I’m hurt. Definitely not mad,” said Loscher-Curtis. “People make mistakes, and someone chose to get up in the morning and get drunk and get in a car.”
And in doing so, took away her young man.
Her little best buddy.
Her superhero.
“Hug your children. You never know. You never know,” she said. “I’m replaying my last hug and kiss from him and you never think it’s going to be the last one.”
The driver who hit them, 56-year-old Carl Wayne Johnson, was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of DUI, automobile homicide, and other charges.
Loscher-Curtis is expected to make a full recovery.
