Snow falls on 300 West in front of the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City on Jan. 1, 2020.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utahns who rang in the new year at midnight on Jan. 1 experienced cold but relatively dry conditions.

That all changed hours later as a winter storm rolled across the state and began dropping snow on many areas along the Wasatch Front and Back.

KSL meteorologist Grant Weyman said the snow will be accumulating throughout the day, with northern valleys expected to see between 3 – 6 inches of snow by the time the storm lets up on Thursday.

“Road accumulation will become a bigger issue as we go through the day as the snow will continue to come down in waves,” Weyman reported on KSL Weather.

The Utah Department of Transportation reported crashes throughout the morning on roads along the Wasatch Front, and road restrictions were put in place in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons and Parley’s Canyon.

Vehicles traveling in those canyon areas are required to have four-wheel drive and/or chains.

The biggest impact Wednesday morning was along the northern Wasatch Front, but Weyman said that snow will continue to make its way southward throughout the day, eventually hitting the Cedar City area.

According to the National Weather Service, the moderately heavy snow will push through the northern end of the state throughout the morning. By the afternoon, it will affect the central and southern portions of Utah, affecting the I-15 corridor.

Scattered snow showers are expected throughout the night and into a portion of Thursday morning as well.
