Uintah County Is Utah’s First Second Amendment Sanctuary County

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – In response to Virginia’s recent legislation that enacted red flag laws and universal background checks for gun owners, Uintah County commissioners voted unanimously to ignore gun laws that county leaders deem unconstitutional.

Deseret News reports it’s one of more than 400 municipalities across the country that are passing similar resolutions.

“There definitely is a movement in some of our more liberal neighbors and fellow states like Virginia that their governor and state legislature is trying to take action on the right to keep and bear arms,” said John Stearmer, chief deputy Uintah County attorney.

Stearmer said the ordinance will go into effect this month.

The resolution will make it unlawful in Uintah County to stifle gun ownership — including banning or limiting the possession of guns and accessories and registration or tracking of firearms or firearms owners. Police who enforce such laws could be charged with a class B misdemeanor.
