SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Both Democrat and Republican voters in Northern Utah are choosing the candidates to face off in November in the wide-open race to replace retiring longtime Congressman Rob Bishop.

The early results showed Blake Moore leading Bob Stevenson in the GOP primary by 576 votes, with 30.2 percent of the vote to 29.6 percent. Kerry Gibson had 23.5 percent and Katie Witt had 16.7 percent.

According to the Associated Press, 88 percent of the Republican vote had been counted.

KSL-TV reporter Ladd Egan spoke with three of the four GOP candidates Tuesday evening. They were all hoping to capture those last-minute voters who returned ballots Tuesday.

“We sprinted to the finish line. We gave it our all. Whatever is supposed to happen is going to happen,”  said  Moore. “If we’re successful we’re going to take on the next piece of this.”

“I’m just feeling grateful,” said Witt. “I’m feeling grateful for everyone who has helped my family, my friends, [and] supporters.”

“This has been a wonderful campaign. It’s been challenging, with the COVID-19 situation,” said Gibson. “We are so grateful for the opportunity we’ve had to reach out to voters and interact with them.”

KSL reached out to Stevenson and Parry but did not hear back by news time.

There was also a Democratic primary contest for the 1st Congressional District between Darren Parry and Jamie Cheek.

With 40 percent of the votes counted, Parry led with a 52.5 percent of the vote to Cheek’s 47.5 percent.

“We’re pretty sure we’re going to have the highest turnout since 1970, so we’re definitely excited to see if we excited Democrats to the ballot box,” said Cheek.

KSL also reached out to Parry but did not hear back.
