Bountiful High Principal To Reveal Decision On School Mascot

BOUNTIFUL, Utah – Officials with the Davis School District said Bountiful High School’s principal will reveal his decision on whether the school will change or modify the school’s Braves mascot next week.

“Because the decision of school mascots and school colors are made at the school level, the decision to keep the mascot or choose a new one — in this instance — is being made by Bountiful High School Principal Aaron Hogge,” district officials said.

School administrators met with the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, students and faculty, as well as community members who live inside school boundaries.

Current discussions on the mascot started last summer after demonstrations and riots swept the country following the death of George Floyd in Minnesota.

It eventually led the NFL’s Washington Football Team to abandon its controversial Redskins mascot.

KSL also reported last summer that organizers started a petition to change the Bountiful High School mascot.

The release said the school administration organized a committee that was asked to do the following:

• Identify and discuss concerns that have been presented regarding the school’s mascot
• Listen to the various perspectives of stakeholders on the issue
• Discuss potential solutions moving forward

The committee was also asked to other questions while gathering feedback:

• What are the key points from each perspective?
• What are the reasons for requesting to keep the mascot?
• What are the reasons for requesting to change the mascot?
• What are the factors the administration should consider when making a decision?

The release said Hogge will reveal his decision Monday at 4 p.m. on YouTube.
