TAYLORSVILLE, Utah – Brady Cottam has been hired as chief of police for the Taylorsville Police Department, which will begin operations in July 2021.

Cottam has been in law enforcement for 24 years. His assignments included Unified Police Department executive officer, field training officer, SWAT team leader and other positions, according to a release from the city of Taylorsville.

He was offered the job earlier this month.

“It means the world to me that Taylorsville city leaders have entrusted me with this opportunity to lead our new police department,” Cottam said. “I am looking forward to continuing to put my experience and passion for law enforcement to work. I love what I do.”

Cottam said it’s essential that the new department maintains a strong relationship with residents and community leaders.

Earlier this year Taylorsville city leaders decided to end a contract with UPD and create their own department.

A team of city leaders has met weekly to discuss their vision for the new police department. Cottam was part of that team.

“We are impressed by Chief Cottam’s forward-thinking vision and focus, and he has our full confidence,” said Taylorsville Mayor Kristie Overson. “He has done an outstanding job as an executive officer for the Unified Police Department’s Taylorsville Precinct, and we are grateful we will be able to continue to rely on his leadership.”

UPD Precinct Chief Dwayne Anjewierden will lead the department until the Taylorsville City Police Department becomes fully operational on July 1, the release said.

The Taylorsville City Council is scheduled to vote on Cottam’s appointment next week.
