New App Offers Savings On Each Gallon Of Gas, But Stations Limited

Apr 7, 2021, 8:35 AM

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – We all feel the pain at the gas pump, and unless you’ve got a TRAX station right outside your front door, you’ve got to fill up more often than you’d like.

Have you heard the advertisements for the “Get Upside” app lately?

It claims to give you a discount on every gallon of gas you buy, which made KSL’s Dan Spindle immediately skeptical — so he had to check it out.

Step one was finding a participating station. Spindle tracked down a Phillips 66 in Woods Cross and you might be thinking — is it worth all the trouble to download an app and to take the time?

Well, the driver who last used the pump spent $170 for 54 gallons — so it just might be worth it.

Once you’re ready to pump, you just click “claim offer.”

It brings up different savings options based on regular, mid-grade, premium or diesel fuels.

You have to enter in some of the numbers from the card you’ll be using and you’re off and running.

You fill up your tank and it looks like you’re paying full price. But on the app, it’s actually processing your savings.

The biggest problem would be the lack of stations — KSL could only find Phillips 66 stations participating, which limits your options. There were no stations in the Salt Lake or Utah valleys.

But the app was easy to use. The app said it takes two to four days to see savings show up in your account.

Then it’s just going to be a dollar or so. Spindle received $0.97 back from his purchase using the app.

If you fill up, let’s say, five times a month over the course of a year, there’s a chance you could make up to $70 on average.

But if you go out of your way to find these stations, you’re just using the money that you would save. So you really don’t want to use the time or the mileage to track one of these pumps down.

Logan, Kaysville, Bountiful and Fillmore residents were in luck — everyone else will have to use the “request station” feature on the app to really make it worthwhile.
