Sixth Grader In Custody After 3 Shot At Idaho School

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A shooting at a middle school in Rigby, Idaho, left two students and an adult custodian with gunshot wounds and a female student was taken into custody, authorities said during an afternoon news conference.

A doctor at a news conference Thursday said none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the shooting around 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the school just north of Idaho Falls.

Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said a sixth-grade student had a gun in her backpack. They said she pulled it out in a hallway and started shooting.

“(The incident) moved towards an exit to the outside of the building, to the outside where a victim was shot outside. So two victims were shot in the school and one was shot outside,” Anderson said.

Anderson did not release any information on the juvenile taken into custody. Police executed a search warrant at the girl’s home.

Officials said a teacher at the school disarmed the girl and held her until authorities arrived.

One of the students was shot in an extremity and was expected to need surgery. Officials said the other student may have suffered two gunshots, also believed to be in an extremity.

The adult victim suffered what was called a “through and through” gunshot wound, meaning the bullet went completely through the area where he was shot.

The students will be held in the hospital overnight and could possibly be released Friday. The custodian was treated and released.

School officials said classes were canceled for Friday.

Anderson said the school’s surveillance system captured the incident on video, but he added it’s up to the district attorney to decide when and if the video would be released.

Anderson said good training for an incident like this was critical.

“Our children in this community have been through the same training. Multiple times every year,” he said. “The response from the law enforcement but not only that, the response from the school district, the teachers and the students – it was unbelievable. It was unbelievable.”

A GoFundMe* account has been set up to help with the victims’ medical bills and counseling services for the victims, students and staff, and also the shooter.
