Investigation Underway After Small Plane Crashes Into North Logan Home

LOGAN, Utah — A federal investigation is underway by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration after a small plane crashed into a North Logan home, killing the pilot.

It was a tragic and frantic scene Saturday night, and neighbors said they are still processing what happened.

It’s something you never expect or want to see happen, especially in your neighborhood; yet despite everything that has happened, the community has come together, saying their thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family.

“He loved, he loved being a pilot. That was his favorite thing,” said family friend Cathy Ball.

Cathy and Ed Ball said their longtime family friend was a retired Delta Air Lines pilot.

“He looked forward to having his family on the plane with him,” said Cathy.

But Saturday, their friend, a Logan resident, was involved in an unexpected plane crash.

“He’d fly his little planes here all the time,” said Cathy.

Unfortunately, their friend did not survive.

KSL-TV has chosen to withhold his name, pending official identification.

“We are just touched that we had to come see him,” said Cathy.

Logan firefighters said around 8:40 p.m. Saturday, an experimental SeaRay LSX crashed into the back of home on Meadow Lark Lane in North Logan.

“I was a few blocks away,” said Jess Yonker. “We saw the plane fly over us, head towards the mountains. We saw it kind of tilt its wings back and forth, made a turn from there.”

That’s when Yonkers said she saw the plane go down.

“We didn’t see the final crash, but it did appear that it tried to climb and make a turn, and at that point is when we saw it dive,” she said.

Yonkers and several other neighbors ran to help.

“We ran over here as quick as we could,” she said. “We went to the back of the house, looking for the plane. (We) couldn’t see it and then looked up and saw that it was in the roof.”

Yonkers said a couple of doctors who live in the neighborhood also rushed to help.

“We felt like it was best to get them up there so they could see the condition of the patient, so we found a palette (and they) were able to scale up the roof,” she said.

Firefighters said the pilot’s son witnessed the crash and also climbed on the roof to help his father.

“People were up on the roof helping,” said neighbor Breanna Studenka. “It was an amazing effort.”

Firefighters said no one was home.

They worked through the night to lower the plane using a crane.

“Our hearts go out to the family,” said Ed and Cathy Ball. “We’re going to miss him. Wonderful family.”

The NTSB has asked anyone who witnessed the plane crash to contact them at witness@ntsb.gov and provide a statement.
