5 Homes, Apartment Complex Destroyed In Massive Ogden Fire

OGDEN, Utah — Several homes were destroyed in a four-alarm fire in Ogden that started at an under-construction apartment complex and quickly spread to nearby properties late Monday night.

Approximately 80 firefighters from seven departments responded to the scene located in the 2800 block of Grant Ave.

They said flames were so intense by the time they arrived that they weren’t able to go inside the buildings and do initial searches.

Two people were initially reported missing, but they were located before 5:15 a.m.

Ogden firefighters said this is one of the largest fires they’ve ever dealt with in the city, and one possible suspect has been taken into custody.

One firefighter was taken to an area hospital for exhaustion and two citizens were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.

Chief Mike Mathieu with the Ogden City Fire Department compared the fire to a massive fire that broke out at a Millcreek construction site on June 16, causing millions of dollars of damage.

Initial estimates placed damages from Tuesday’s fire at approximately $3 million.

Mathieu added five businesses, firetrucks and vehicles in the area were damaged by intense heat from the flames.

Crews were on scene watching for any hot spots throughout the morning.

Over 160 people were without power Tuesday morning but crews were able to access the scene and restored power in the area.

No cause has been given for the fire but officials said it is under investigation.

Firefighters also responded to a fire at an abandoned home in the area Monday afternoon.

Officials couldn’t confirm if the person of interest is related to both incidents.
