Keeping Your Pets Safe During Firework Shows

SALT LAKE CITY – Whether it’s the neighborhood fireworks in the street or the big city displays, a lot of pets are scared by the loud booms and flashes of light that traditionally accompany the Fourth of July.
“When they hear fireworks and see those bright flashes of light, they can dig under fences, jump fences, break off tethers — some have even broken through windows trying to escape,” said Temma Martin with the Best Friends Animal Society.
Someone near your home will be launching fireworks, whether it’s legal or not, and you’ll want to keep your furry family members safe. So what can you do to keep them safe during what can be a rough few nights?
- Make sure your pets have a collar and tags.
- Make sure they are microchipped and the information is up to date.
- Put your pet inside in a room with lots of noise, maybe a war movie or a white noise machine to drown out the loud bangs outside.
- If your pet does get lost, check things like the Next Door app and Facebook groups for lost and found pets.
Matin said technology has made it possible to get your pet back in real-time and not have to search the shelters that inevitably get strays and lost animals that run off due to fireworks every year.
