Popular Ogden bakery burns down

OGDEN, Utah — Topper Bakery, a staple of the Ogden community for 82 years, was destroyed in a fire late Monday night.

More than two dozen firefighters responded to the scene around 10 p.m.

Crews attacked the fire first from the inside but said because it got too dangerous with flames shooting from the attic area. Because they were worried it would spread to nearby structures, they switched to attacking from the outside.

Luckily, no one was inside at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries reported.

Firefighters said this one hits close to home, as Topper Bakery has stepped up for the community over the years.

“They supported us in our city functions, in our city picnics, in stuff like that, so there’s a good relationship between Topper Bakery and the city of Ogden. So we’re devastated about what happened to them,” Ogden City Fire Deputy Chief Mike Slater said.

The owners posted an update for their loyal customers Tuesday morning: “It is with a sad heart that I report that Topper Bakery caught on fire late last night! They are still trying to figure out the damages and what happened. Needless to say we will not be open for business for a while. Thank you for all of your support over the years! We will keep you posted on what is going on and when we can reopen. Sorry for any inconveniences this will cause so many of our customers.”

Many of their customers replied with heartfelt messages.

Fire officials said the building is a total loss, with damage estimated at over $250,000.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A GoFundMe* page has been set up to help rebuild the bakery and reopen it.
