Two South Ogden condos heavily damaged in overnight fire

SOUTH OGDEN, Utah — Two families have been displaced after a fire tore through two condos in South Ogden late Saturday night, injuring two firefighters. 

The condos in the neighborhood near 800 East and 5500 South are close together, which put pressure on firefighters to keep the flames from spreading to more homes. 

“There were reports that there were people trapped, which obviously amps us up. Fortunately, there was nobody trapped inside,” said Chief Cameron West with the South Ogden Fire Department. 

Fire officials said they called in a large response, and at one point, had 32 firefighters from six agencies working to put the flames out. 

The fire sparked in the kitchen of the end unit and spread quickly. 

Firefighters said the condo didn’t have smoke alarms.

A woman was awake inside the home and reportedly called 911 and told everyone to get outside. 

“That moment, you forget all about the fire — those are just material things. It’s just God’s grace,” said neighbor Tricia Broaenax. 

Neighbors said the two condos were owned by two sisters, who live with their families in the side-by-side units.

They said their other sister lives in the next one down. That condo didn’t sustain damage, but they said it was a little too close for comfort. 

“[The condo owner] said, you know, you got insurance, nobody died, nobody got hurt, and things happen in life, and you know, we will get through this,” said neighbor Lyle Bailey. 

The condos aren’t a complete loss, but there was extensive smoke and water damage.

Fire officials estimated the damage at $500,000.

One firefighter became dehydrated and another rolled his ankle, but fire officials expect both will recover quickly.
