Outdoor group opposes possible Sardine Canyon development

WELLSVILLE, Utah — A developer is looking to put about 130 homes in Sardine Canyon, but an outdoor group says the land should instead be preserved.

We’re talking about the area around the old Sherwood Hills Golf Course.

The homes would go on both sides of the highway, but at least one group believes the land should be open for everyone to enjoy.

When those fall colors show up, a lot of people stop to take a look.

Inside the old Sherwood Hills, “it’s a beautiful, pristine area,” according to Glenn Ames.

Ames said the nature views are amazing.

“I’ve spent a lot of time up there in the past over the last 20 years, again, with owner’s permission,” he said. “We used to put mountain bike events on the property and just grew really fond.”

So, when he heard of plans to turn the area into a new subdivision — the Bridle Path Estates — he was less than thrilled.

“It’s not the best use of this pristine forest canyon land, to put it into development,” he said.

As one of the directors over Cache Trails Alliance, Ames is in the early stages of working with government organizations to buy and save the land.

“We wanna put together a group, whatever that ends up looking like, with the end goal of putting that into, again, permanent recreation open space,” he said.

A good example, said Ames, is the new Murray Farm Trailhead. Also in Wellsville, with roadway, parking and bathrooms put in just a few months ago.

For anything like that to happen here, Ames said he’ll need more time, and ultimately, for the city council to intervene.

“That’s step one,” he said. “If indeed they can stop it, again, it’s not the best use of the property. It’s Wellsville’s water source. Multiple reasons why it’s not the best use of the property.”

KSL-TV reached out to Wellsville City and the developer, but have not heard back.

Ames said he’s hearing from a number of organizations that want to get involved with his effort to preserve this area.
