Search for Taylorsville shooting suspect over after man found with self-inflicted gunshot wound

Nov 4, 2021, 5:20 AM | Updated: 2:26 pm

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — Officers from multiple police agencies responded to the intersection of 4700 South and 2200 West after shots were exchanged between a suspect and a Taylorsville police officer.

Taylorsville Police Chief Brady Cottam said officers located the suspect after a resident called police, saying there was a man in one of her home’s window wells.

The suspect was located by officers with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead on scene.

“The officers were able to converge again with the help of K-9 and the helicopter into an area. They encountered the subject and the subject, it appears, put a gun to himself and shot himself and took his own life,” Cottam said.

Crews reopened 4700 South around 8 a.m. Thursday and a shelter-in-place order that was been issued for homes in the area has been lifted.

The Granite School District said no late starts or closures for schools in the area would be necessary and classes proceeded as normal Thursday morning.

The Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter and K-9 units from multiple agencies assisted in the search, and Cottam said the DPS helicopter was critical in locating the suspect.

Cottam described the suspect as a white man between 20 and 30 years old with blonde hair, medium build, wearing a tan top or hoodie with white tennis shoes.

A Taylorsville officer responded to a suspicious vehicle in the area around 4 a.m. Thursday, and the suspect fled on foot. Cottam said the suspect then turned and fired several rounds at the officer, who returned fire before taking shelter. The officer did not suffer any injuries in the shooting.

Several armed officers were seen at nearby intersections searching for the suspect throughout the morning.

“We believe the area is safe at this point,” Cottam said. “There’s no reason for us to believe there are any outstanding suspects.”

One person was struck by shrapnel and suffered minor injuries after shots were fired, according to Cottam. That man is expected to be OK.

The Salt Lake County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Protocol has been activated and an outside agency will investigate the incident.
