Utah family searching for missing loved one a second time

Nov 11, 2021, 7:39 PM | Updated: Nov 12, 2021, 8:05 am

SALT LAKE CITY — The search for Elizabeth Salgado captured Utah’s attention six years ago, and now, her family is searching for another relative who hasn’t been seen for months.

Authorities in southern Utah have started looking for Salgado’s aunt, 45-year-old Miriam Judith Salgado, who has not been seen in about three months.

The family knows all too well what it’s like to have a loved one go missing.

A man found Salgado’s remains in Hobble Creek Canyon in 2018, three years after she disappeared.

Elizabeth Salgado Homicide Case Still Active After Five Years

Police have not arrested anyone in that case.

Washington County deputies found Miriam Salgado’s car on a dirt road abandoned in an unincorporated area outside of Virgin, near Zion National Park on Sept. 20.

When they ran the license plate, they found it was linked to a missing person’s case filed in Nephi.

“My sister she doesn’t like to keep in touch very much with us,” said Rosemberg Salgado, who is Miriam’s older brother and Elizabeth’s uncle. “The reason we started getting worried is because when they found her car in this remote area it was like, okay so something is going on.”

Rosemberg said Miriam has mental health problems and police found her sleeping in her car in the weeks leading up to her disappearance. Deputies believe she was last seen on Aug. 19.

Is it possible the two disappearances are related?

“We thought about that too, I’m not sure if it is connected or not,” Rosemberg said.

Both the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Utah County deputies said right now they don’t have an obvious connection between Miriam Salgado’s disappearance and Elizabeth Salgado’s murder, but it was not ruled out.

“You at least have to let the question into your mind, could there be someone who has it out for the Salgado family? We don’t know that we don’t have any evidence suggesting that they do but at the very least it’s unusual that another member of that family is now missing,” said Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

Miriam is described as 5-foot-2 and 101 pounds.

Deputies in southern Utah said they’ve twice searched the area where they found her car but they did not find any sign of her.

They said there are no obvious signs of foul play. If you have any information you’re asked to call 435-656-6644.
