53 million Americans are traveling for Thanksgiving, here’s what you need to know before you go

Nov 22, 2021, 11:46 AM | Updated: 12:31 pm

More than 53 million Americans will be traveling this week for the Thanksgiving holiday and 48 million of those are going to be behind the wheel heading over the river and through the woods to grandma and grandpa’s house.

Before heading out for the holiday, the Salt Lake City airport shared some travel tips and information.

Passengers are encouraged to check-in before leaving for the airport, to streamline their arrival at the airport. Passengers should also check the airline’s website or app to see if the flight is on-time and not delayed by weather. It is recommended that passengers arrive two hours before scheduled boarding for domestic flights and three hours prior to international flights.

Due to Thanksgiving, the airport is expecting especially heavy travel on Wednesday and Sunday and alternate parking areas will be open if the economy parking reaches capacity.

For drivers picking up passengers, they are advised to stay updated on the flight status and wait in the Park and Wait lot until their passenger is at the curb ready for pick up.

The airport announced they would have Airport Ambassadors volunteers to help direct people. In addition, they will have local musicians performing in the concourse and terminals Wednesday. Several new restaurants have opened for passengers to enjoy including Bruges Belgian Bistro, Panda Express and Panera Bread.

AAA also released a checklist for travel this week.

First, they advised to create a packing list and let the kids create their own lists for fun. That way the kids can be involved and the parents won’t have any complaints down the road.

Next, have the car checked out and know insurance policy options in the event of an unfortunate accident.

AAA advised travelers to do the laundry two or three days before the trip.

Travelers should plan snacks and drinks for the trip that will last.

Lastly, create a checklist of things to lock up or put away.

These simple tips should help those traveling for the holiday to enjoy the trip and have some peace of mind.
