Low blood supply has American Red Cross in a crisis

SALT LAKE CITY — A dangerously low blood supply has the American Red Cross in a crisis. The situation has become so dire that doctors are now being forced to decide which patients receive blood transfusions and not have to wait.
“We need your help letting potential donors know how critical it is that they make an appointment to give blood or platelets this winter,” said Keith Paul, regional communications director.
In return, January donors to the American Red Cross will automatically be entered into a drawing to win a trip to the Super Bowl, a home theatre package and a $500 e-gift card.

The ongoing national blood crisis is the worst shortage in more than a decade. Blood and platelet donations are critically needed to prevent delays in medical treatment. All blood types, especially type O, are needed. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment now. The American Red Cross recently had less than one day of critical blood types. The pandemic has contributed to a 62 percent reduction in blood drives.
“Winter weather across the country and the recent surge of COVID-19 cases are compounding the already-dire situation facing the blood supply,” said Dr. Baia Lasky, American Red Cross medical director. “Please, if you are eligible, make an appointment to give blood or platelets in the days and weeks ahead to ensure no patient is forced to wait for critical care.”
