EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah — The Utah County Sheriff’s Office released the name of a 19-year-old man who died Friday after being hit by a dirt bike.

Caelan Lewis, of Eagle Mountain, was in a crosswalk when the deputies said a dirt bike traveling at a high rate of speed hit him just before 5 p.m. Friday.

A 14-year-old riding the motorcycle ran a stop sign deputies said.

It happened at the intersection of Porter’s Crossing and Evans Ranch Drive.

The impact knocked Lewis about 50 feet from the crosswalk.

Deputies said the 14-year-old on the bike slid about 200 feet.

Deputies said people on scene administered CPR to the 19-year-old who sustained significant trauma and Unified Fire Authority paramedics treated both involved at the scene.

A medical helicopter transported Lewis to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, but he died at the hospital.

The 14-year-old was in serious condition but expected to recover.

Deputies did not say if the 14-year-old faced charges.

Caelan Lewis’ family shared a statement with KSL Sunday afternoon. It reads in full:

“Caelan was a very kind and generous young man that put the welfare of others first before himself.  We are devastated at his loss and the knowledge that his little sister will be growing up without her older brother.  He would forgive people whole-heartedly and defend others vigorously.  He loved sword fighting, martial arts, and ballroom dancing.  He enjoyed reading and gaming with his friends.  Caelan joined the US Marine Corps during Spring Break of his senior year at Cedar Valley High School as a reservist.  He left for training in July and returned home just a few days before Christmas.  He planned to work for a year to save some money then put in his papers to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He leaves in his wake a gaping hole in the hearts of family and friends.

His viewing and funeral service will be held Friday morning, followed by his burial in the family plot at Salt Lake City Cemetery.  He will be buried with full honors by the USMC.”
