Police: One in custody after stealing, crashing SUV in SLC

SALT LAKE CITY — Police say a man has been taken into custody after allegedly stealing an SUV, fleeing from officers. and crashing the vehicle in a parking lot.

The man was identified as 28-year-old, Davis Stoney.

Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson Brent Weisberg said officers responded to a Motel 6 near 600 South and 200 West after a security guard reported his vehicle had been stolen around 5:20 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers located the stolen vehicle near 1300 South State Street, and they attempted a traffic stop. However, the Stoney fled and Weisberg said officers did not pursue.

Other officers were checking the area when they located Stoney driving in a parking lot at Salt Lake Community College’s South City Campus, near 1600 South State Street.

According to police, the suspect crashed and rolled the vehicle into a fence on the edge of the parking lot.

After the crash, the Stoney climbed onto the top of the vehicle and refused to come down when the release states, he began to act “erratically.”

Weisberg said officers used loudspeakers and less-lethal shotguns with multiple bean bag rounds to defuse the “very dynamic situation.”

The standoff lasted about 30 minutes and police developed a “tactical plan to approach Stoney, and safely took him into custody.”

He was taken to an area hospital with very minor injuries.

Once medically cleared, officers booked Stoney into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Interfering with an Arresting Officer, and Fleeing in a Vehicle.
