Eight employees of a Salt Lake City-based company have been released from the hospital after they were involved in a large collision Friday night in Austin, Texas.

According to a statement Monday evening from Sorenson Communications, LLC, two employees are still recovering in the hospital. A description of their injuries was not immediately available.

“We acknowledge the ongoing impact of this traumatic event on many people, and our Sorenson colleagues who were impacted continue to have our full support,” read part of the statement.

The company states that the employees were at a food truck in Austin, where they were attending a DeafNation expo, when two vehicles collided in a nearby intersection, sending one of the vehicles into the group.

“Injured employees were transported to two local hospitals and treated for varying degrees of serious injuries,” read the statement.

The day after the crash, Sorenson CEO Jorge Rodriguez flew to Austin to visit the injured employees as well as those who offered aid

“Sorenson is deeply saddened by the accident and by the physical and emotional injuries that were sustained and that continue,” Rodriguez said. “We express gratitude for the outpouring of support from the Deaf and greater communities as well as from industry colleagues for their care and concern during this difficult time.”

Sorenson’s full statement reads:

Sorenson is pleased to report that eight of the ten original Sorenson employees who were transported to Austin, TX hospitals over the weekend following a horrific accident Friday night have now been released. Two employees remain in the hospital. We acknowledge the ongoing impact of this traumatic event on many people, and our Sorenson colleagues who were impacted continue to have our full support.

Sorenson employees, who were in Austin to attend a DeafNation expo, were at a food truck when two vehicles collided in a nearby intersection, sending one vehicle into the Sorenson group. Injured employees were transported to two local hospitals and treated for varying degrees of serious injuries.

On Saturday, Sorenson CEO Jorge Rodriguez flew to Austin to visit injured employees as well as the valiant employees who quickly mobilized to provide on-the-ground support to colleagues. “Sorenson is deeply saddened by the accident and by the physical and emotional injuries that were sustained and that continue,” Rodriguez said. “We express gratitude for the outpouring of support from the Deaf and greater communities as well as from industry colleagues for their care and concern during this difficult time.” Rodriguez emphasized the need for communication accessibility for the Deaf community. Sorenson is providing patients with sign language interpreting and supportive resources, including counseling services through the company’s Employee Assistance Program.

Preliminary reports from those involved indicate that there may have been failures to provide appropriate interpreting accommodations for Deaf victims and witnesses. When Sorenson was made aware, we proactively deployed resources to meet those needs. Sorenson will provide updates as more information comes to light.

Salt Lake City-based Sorenson is the leading provider of accessible communication services for people who are Deaf and hard-of-hearing.”
