Man says father’s ashes were among items stolen in Sandy trailer theft

SANDY, Utah — A loved one’s ashes were among the items stolen during a broad-daylight theft of a trailer from a parking lot of a popular shopping complex Friday, according to the trailer’s owner.
Zachary Mitrovich, who drives an all-purpose van, had been traveling state to state for business and pulled into the parking lot south of The Shops at South Town around 8 p.m. Friday to stop by a coffee shop.
During that time, a surveillance camera from a neighboring business captured two men in a dark-colored pickup pulling up next to Mitrovich’s van, disconnecting the trailer from the van and hooking it up to the pickup and then driving away.
“It took them three minutes, 16 seconds to steal that stuff,” Mitrovich told KSL TV in an interview Tuesday.
Mitrovich said the thieves got away with two motorcycles and containers that housed items with sentimental value, including his grandfather’s dog tags from World War II, family photos and his father’s ashes.
“Boy, I am upset!” Mitrovich said.
Sandy police said Tuesday evening they were investigating the matter and urged anyone with information to contact their officers at 801-799-3000. Mitrovich provided a personal number: 719.900.9941.
Mitrovich also said he was offering a reward.
He said he and his associates were using their resources to see if any of the items showed up for sale in Utah or any other state.
Mitrovich said he was hopeful those responsible would eventually be identified.
“These people will get caught,” Mitrovich said. “I will search to the end of the earth for you. Those are important to me!”
