WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah — Public safety officials are calling on drivers to be more aware after they responded to four auto-pedestrian crashes in the Santa Clara-Ivins area of Washington County in the month of August.

According to a Tuesday afternoon Facebook post from Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety, the incidents happened in the morning hours.

The first incident occurred at 6:20 a.m. on Aug. 9 when a juvenile cyclist was traveling southbound on 200 East, crossing through the intersection at Deseret Rose Way. Officials said a vehicle was attempting to make a right-hand turn when it struck the cyclist.

“The cyclist did not have any lights, reflective gear and on the wrong side of the road,” the post stated.

The second incident — which occurred at 6 a.m. on Aug. 11 — involved an adult cyclist. Officials said the cyclist, who had lights at the front and rear of the bicycle, was westbound at the roundabout on Center and Docena when a motorhome heading the same direction struck the cyclist and fled the scene.

“The driver of the vehicle was located soon after,” the post stated.

At 10 a.m. on Aug. 16, an adult on an electric scooter was traveling eastbound, crossing the intersection at Santa Clara Drive and Lava Flow. A driver was attempting to make a right-hand turn onto Lava Flow when the vehicle struck the pedestrian on the scooter. Officials said the pedestrian had the right of way having the crosswalk light on.

The fourth incident occurred at 6:45 a.m. on Aug. 30. A juvenile was walking northbound in the crosswalk at 100 West and Center while a car was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Center from 100 West.

“The driver did not observe anyone in the crosswalk until he struck the juvenile pedestrian who was in the middle of the crosswalk,” the post stated.

Officials have asked residents to check and double check before driving through and crossing into an intersection, adding that drivers should be aware of their surroundings.

“With juveniles back at school and the weather starting to cool down a little bit, let us be diligent and mindful of the many options individuals are using to travel,” the post concluded.
