UDOT warns of possible travel delays over Labor Day weekend

SANDY, Utah — As Utahns hit the road and say goodbye to summer this weekend, traffic engineers with the Utah Department of Transportation are warning of possible delays in a few spots.

As travelers head out of town Friday afternoon and evening, UDOT said to expect the following delays:

  • Northbound I-15 in Davis County — up to 20-minute delays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Southbound I-15 in Salt Lake County — up to 30-minute delays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Southbound I-15 near Nephi — up to 10-minute delays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

And on Monday, as Wasatch Front travelers return home from their getaways, UDOT said delays are also expected in these areas:

  • Westbound US-6 in Spanish Fork Canyon — up to 30-minute delays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Northbound I-15 near Nephi — up to 10-minute delays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“These delays are just estimates,” said UDOT spokesperson John Gleason. “If you have a crash that’s thrown in, it takes additional time to clear that and that could mean major headaches. So plan around these times if you can and avoid those headaches.”

It order to help cars move along, UDOT has suspended construction work over the three-day weekend and will try to open all lanes to traffic.

“But you still have to obey those reduced speed limits because the lane shifts are in place and there are some lane restrictions on some of those major projects,” Gleason said.

Even though crews won’t be on-site working, Gleason said drivers should slow down in construction areas and watch for uneven pavement, narrow lanes and other construction conditions.

“When you’re out there on the road, make sure that you’re just focused solely on driving and getting to where you’re going safely,” Gleason added. “We want to make sure that things are properly tied down and that your trailer is properly hitched and that everybody’s prepared.”

Several large projects will still have lane closures over the weekend, including I-84 near Morgan, eastbound I-80 in Tooele County, I-70 near the I-15 interchange and US-40 north of Heber City.
