Filming for WWII drama underway in Tooele

TOOELE, Utah — As Utah celebrated veterans Friday, a true World War Two story titled “Devil’s Men,” is being filmed right here in Utah.

On Friday, the cast and crew were filming at the Tooele Train Museum.

The movie is based on a true story following Sam Byrne, a rancher from Wyoming who was drafted into WWII and was recruited from basic training to join the first special service forces.

Caleb Hafen plays the role of Byrne in the film.

“This opportunity is super unique because we’re trying to live truthfully under circumstances that are imaginary for us, but are not imaginary for so many people,” Hafen said.

“We follow him into WWII because we have all his letters and journal, so this is a very personal account for what it was like for this soldier,” David Bresnahan said.

Bresnahan wears many hats as the story came to life on screen.

“First off, I’m the writer. Next, I’m the producer putting it all together. I’m the director of the film and I have a role in the film,” Bresnahan explained.

Bresnahan said the cast, crew, and everyone associated with the movie are Utah based. That includes all the locations.

Using a train at the Tooele Train Museum to shoot a few scenes down to the tiniest details and uniforms, Bresnahan said it’s important the movie reflects the time period to the best of their abilities.

“Something that we talk about in this film is war is awful, and God’s not on any side of war,” Hafen said.

He said this story will resonate with many families whose loved ones or people they know served in WWII.

“He represents all the soldiers who survived and had to come home and live with what they went through. I think there are many people who will think, ‘Yeah, my grandpa never talked about his stories in the war.’ You’ll find out why when you watch this film,” Bresnahan said.

The movie will be released on Memorial Day next year.
