WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — Police were still searching for a victim and others involved in a shooting Monday, one day after an apartment complex in West Valley City was riddled with bullet holes.

“With the number of rounds that were fired, we consider ourselves very lucky that none of the innocent citizens in the apartment complex or in the area were struck by anything,” said Sgt. Kevin Johnston with the West Valley City Police Department.

Police said they received multiple calls before 11 p.m. Sunday, reporting up to 30 shots fired from the parking lot of Anaya’s Market and a nearby apartment complex.

Police said at least four people were involved. Two of them drove into the parking lot in an SUV and got into some sort of confrontation with at least two others.

The meeting soon escalated when at least one person pulled out a gun and started firing shots. Police believe one person was hit. Multiple bullets also peppered the nearby apartment complex and cars in the parking lot.

When police arrived at the scene, they said both parties were gone.

Shell casings, bullet holes, a shoe and some other items left behind told investigators some of the story Sunday night. But blood at the scene added a whole new element and more questions.

“We do our best to figure out what happened so we can make sure we can hold them accountable, and we do what we can to make sure the citizens feel safe at night,” Johnston said.

At least 10 bullet holes were visible at the apartment complex the next day, including on the outside of two units. Tenants in the apartments told KSL they ducked behind furniture for cover. No one in the apartments was hurt.

Police have obtained and are reviewing surveillance video that shows at least part of the incident. They have also reached out to multiple local hospitals, but as of Monday evening, were still working to determine who was injured at the scene.
