SALT LAKE CITY — An overnight winter storm has led to several crashes on snow-covered and slick roads across northern Utah.

KSL meteorologist Brett Benson says the strong but fast-moving storm will largely exit the Wasatch Front later Friday morning, but the intense snowfall and winds will leave their mark.

“The combination of snow initially melting as it falls, moderate/heavy snow rates & incoming cold air has the potential to lead to ‘flash freeze’ conditions tonight after the arrival of heavier snow across N. Utah,” the National Weather Service said. “This will lead to slick, hazardous conditions for many.”

Later in the day, precipitation will pick up in central and southern Utah and driving in mountain passes will be difficult.

A winter storm warning will remain in effect for northern Utah through central and southern Utah mountains through 3 p.m. Friday.

The NWS advised travelers to be prepared for an emergency with equipment such as flashlights, blankets, food and water, and to check road conditions before heading out.

Utah school districts move online, delay classes

The Canyons School District, Summit Academy schools and Hawthorn Academy have moved all classes to remote learning due to Friday’s storm and poor road conditions.

Tooele and Jordan school districts are holding classes as normally scheduled.

The Alpine, Cache County, Davis, Granite, Murray, Provo, Salt Lake City and Weber school districts announced two-hour delays for their classes on Friday.

Ascent, Monticello and Syracuse Arts academies, and Juan Diego Catholic schools, are also on a two-hour delay.

Lakeview Academy in Saratoga Springs is on a one-hour delayed start while Layton Christian Academy has canceled Friday’s classes.
