SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Multiple Change.or petitions with tens of thousands of signatures are calling for Utah school districts to cancel school the day after Halloween.
“Most of us celebrate Halloween, and this year it is on a Thursday,” says one petition, which calls on the Weber School District to do away with classes on Nov. 1. “So we should get the day after Halloween off from school.”
The petition, aimed at the Weber School District,” had nearly 12,000 signatures Wednesday morning.
Another petitioner calls for the Jordan School District to take Friday off. More than 11,000 people have signed already.
“Halloween is a holiday,” one signer wrote. “We should have the opportunity to go out with our friends and have fun without our parents being strict about a ‘9:00 O’clock’ curfew or something like that. It’s only far [sic] that we simply have the day off so we don’t lack sleep or do bad in school the next day because the previous day was Halloween.”
Nearly 5,000 signed another petition calling on the Granite School District to do the same.
“Everyone is so exhausted the day after school on halloween that most of us aren’t able to focus,” a supporter commented. “We are expected to wake up at 6:30, go to 7 hours of school, finish 3 hours of homework, get good grades, participate in spots [sic], and have a social life all while getting the recommended 9 hours of sleep. This is impossible for anyone! For teens halloween is one of the best nights of the year. It allows us to freely express ourselves in costumes and have fun with our friends. We won’t be able to have fun with our friends if we go home at 8 in order to get to bed on time. For these reasons i strongly urge you to cancel school on November 1st.”
