Police said they received the call at approximately 6:30 a.m. The incident happened in the area of 5200 South and 800 East.
Officials said the boy was taken to the hospital by a family member. The child was treated for a gunshot wound to the head at the hospital emergency room before being flown to Primary Children’s Hospital. He is now in stable condition with a non life-threatening injury.

MPD officer Kenny Bass said it appears the gun belonged to someone inside the home.
“Who actually owned it? Some of those details we’re still trying to figure out,” he said.
Bass said the incident so far appears to be accidental.
“It appears currently the 3-year-old got up before everybody, was able to climb up on the counter and obtain a hand gun which was placed fairly high up in the kitchen, got the gun down, was playing with it, and accidentally shot himself in the head,” said Bass.
Officials said the investigation is ongoing, but they stressed locking up guns, especially with kids at home.
