ST. GEORGE, Utah — A small groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Red Cliffs Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The gathering took place on Saturday with a limited audience.
Officials said the temple will be built on a 14-acre site northeast of 3000 East 1580 South in St. George.
Church President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to build a second Washington County temple in the October 2018 General Conference. The St. George Utah Temple was opened in 1877. The 143-year-old structure has been undergoing renovations.
On June, 19, 2020, the First Presidency released the official name of the temple: the Red Cliffs Utah Temple.
The three-story, 90,000-square-foot structure marks the 2nd temple to be built in St. George and the 25th temple for the state of Utah.
The St. George Utah Temple, which was closed November 4, 2019 for renovations, was the first completed temple in Utah. Officials said it’s expected to reopen in 2022.
Additional temples have been announced in Lindon, Syracuse and Tooele Valley.
The Layton, Orem, Saratoga Springs and Taylorsville temples are currently under construction.
Officials said a video recording for the temple groundbreaking would be made available to the public within a few days, and details for the open house and temple dedication will be announced at a future date.
