The incident happened just before 7:30 a.m. between a passenger van and Salt Lake City garbage truck in the area of 980 South Redwood Road.
Witnesses told police the van was traveling northbound when, for unknown reasons, it veered into southbound lanes and collided head-on with the truck.
“Officers arrived and located two victims, a driver and passenger, inside the van. Officers and paramedics attempted life-saving efforts, but both individuals died on scene,” read a press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.
