SANDY, Utah — Police are questioning an 11-year-old girl after they say she stabbed her mother.
Police said that the 39-year-old mother is in the hospital right now in critical condition.
Police were called to a home near 1600 Nicholas Circle around 1:15 this afternoon by an 11-year-old girl. When they arrived, they learned the child and her mother had gotten into some sort of argument that ended with the 11-year-old stabbing her mother in the chest.
“I just know it was an edged weapon, whether it was a kitchen knife or other type of an edged weapon I do not know,” Dean Carriger with Sandy Police Department said.
The mother was rushed to Intermountain Medical Center and is currently being treated while the 11-year-old was taken by police to be questioned. Sandy police tell us a grandmother was in the home at the time of the stabbing – but could not say if she witnessed it.
The stabbing happened in close geographic and time proximity to a double shooting that included a self-inflicted injury that left a man dead. Police said the two incidents are not related.
Lt. Dean Carriger with the Sandy Police Department said it was an unusual and tragic day in the city.
“We just always implore to people to reach out if they’re stuggling with something regardless of what it is. There are lots of resources in the community, within the county, within the city and just ask people to reach out if they’re having difficulties,” Carriger said.
This is a developing story.
