Centerville, Bountiful police say ‘Nope’ to vandals behind sticker graffiti

CENTERVILLE – “Nope!” That’s what Centerville and Bountiful Police are saying about more than a hundred stickers and graffiti that keep popping up around their cities illegally.

“There seems to be just an outbreak of ‘nope’ going on,” Chief Paul Child with the Centerville Police Department said.

Since November 2016, there have been stickers, graffiti and carvings of the word “nope” placed around town and in the last few days, it has spread to Bountiful, he said.

“We’ve found them on power poles, street signs, even carved into bathroom stalls,” he said. “It’s a nuisance and makes no sense at all.”

The big question, even from the department, is ‘what’s the message behind this four-letter word?’

“It serves really no legitimate purpose that we can see and basically it’s just damaging for people’s property.”

Child said it costs the city about $10 to remove each sticker. As for removing graffiti, the price goes up.

“Etching in the bathrooms and mirrors, you are talking thousands of dollars,” he said.

There have been no leads in who is responsible, but Child hopes that will change as residents remain vigilant.

“To the vandals, I just say ‘nope stop doing it,’” he said. “Say ‘no to nope.’”
