UHP trooper hit by car tells drivers to slow down

LOGAN – The Utah Department of Public Safety is reminding drivers to move over and slow down whenever officers are on the side of the road. A UHP trooper was hit by a car sliding out of control on Sunday. Fortunately, Sgt. Cade Brenchley is OK.
He said it wasn’t until he saw the dash cam video that he realized how lucky he is to be alive. He was out of his cruiser and checking on a crash on Route 91 in Sardine Canyon when a driver lost control. When the car hit him, he flew through the air. Witnesses rushed to help him, and amazingly, he only suffered broken ribs and a broken scapula.
“My wife worries about this more than anything is the snow days,” said Sgt. Brenchley.
Tuesday he spoke from the Logan Regional Hospital with his family at his side and scrapes on his face.
“That’s our job as highway patrolmen is to correct behavior and to gain compliance for those laws for the sake of safety and I think,” he paused laughing, “She’ll never make the same mistake again,” referring to the driver who hit him.
He said he, his four kids and wife don’t have any ill will against the driver. They just all hope this is a lesson for everyone.
Utah Department of Public Safety tweeted that Sgt. Brenchley is the 11th trooper hit on the road this year. In 2017, 10 were hit.
